The Investigations Bureau is responsible for performing the investigative functions of the Newport News Police Department. This bureau has the second largest number of personnel and is comprised of investigators, detectives, technicians, supervisors, and support staff.

Members of the Investigations Bureau investigate citizens' complaints, respond to crime scenes, and investigate drug-related offenses. The Investigations Bureau consists of the below listed divisions and units.

Cases are reviewed and assigned to an investigator for follow-up based on the type of crime and its ability to be resolved. Members of the Bureau gather information for successful case prosecution.
