The boundaries of the South Precinct encompass the drainage canal just south of Center Avenue southward to the James River, Hampton city line and west to the James River. The South Precinct has a population of 35,000 citizens. There is a mix of single-family homes, as well as apartment complexes, some subsidized by Newport News Housing and Redevelopment Authority (NNHRA) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Responsibilities
We also have a detective unit which deals solely with property crimes, such as burglary, vandalism, stolen vehicles, property damage, and economic crimes. The most serious of crimes (murder, rape and robbery) are investigated by the Major Crimes Unit.
The precinct is supervised by a captain, three lieutenants, and 11 sergeants. There are approximately 80 police and civilian personnel assigned to the South Precinct.
