The Marine Unit is staffed on a full-time basis and patrols the Warwick River, James River, and areas of the Port of Virginia.
Its mission is to make the waters of Newport News safe for its citizens and visitors. To accomplish this mission, unit members enforce city, state, and federal laws; work closely with the United States Coast Guard and regional maritime partners, especially during search and rescue (SAR) incidents. In addition, the unit is on constant watch to ensure homeland security by conducting critical infrastructure patrols and radiation/nuclear detection.
The unit works closely with the community by promoting boating safety through vessel safety inspections and attending numerous community events.
