2023 COLA Announcement
The COLA calculation for 2023 is 3.15%. Retirees who retired prior to July 1, 2022 will receive the 3.15% COLA effective July 1, 2023. The adjustment will be applied to their July 31, 2023 pension deposit.

The Newport News Employees' Retirement Fund (NNERF) is a defined benefit (pension) plan administered by the City of Newport News.
Full time City employees hired before March 2010 and full time Schools employees hired before July 2009 are members of NNERF. Members who leave employment (terminate) with at least 5 years of credited service (vested) are eligible to begin receiving a retirement benefit when reaching retirement age:
- Age 50 for sworn Fire, Police and Sheriff members
- Age 60 for all other members
An application is required to begin receiving a NNERF retirement benefit. To apply, complete the Application for Retirement, Direct Deposit and Federal and State Withholding forms below and return the completed application to the Department of Finance. Contact the Department of Finance for assistance.
Benefits
Vested members who leave City employment before retirement are not eligible for health, dental, vision or life insurance through NNERF.
After retirement, all NNERF retirees are eligible for a death benefit of $3,300 payable to the retiree’s legal spouse or beneficiary. Additionally, the spouse of a deceased retiree is entitled to a 50% monthly spousal annuity.
Vested members who die prior to reaching retirement age are not eligible for a death benefit, however a contribution refund or annuity may be payable to a surviving spouse. Contact the Department of Finance for additional information.

The Newport News Employees' Retirement Fund (NNERF) is a defined benefit (pension) plan administered by the City of Newport News.
Full time NNPS employees hired before July 1, 2009 are members of NNERF. School employees hired on or after July 1, 2009 are not eligible for NNERF benefits.
Under NNERF, professional staff who are also covered under a VRS plan are eligible for a supplemental benefit in addition to their VRS retirement. Full time NNPS employees not covered under VRS (generally Child Nutrition, Custodial, Plant Services & Transportation employees) are eligible for a full NNERF retirement.

All NNERF retirees, including School retirees, are eligible for a death benefit of $3,300 payable to the retiree's legal spouse or beneficiary. Additionally, the spouse of a deceased retiree is entitled to a 50% monthly spousal annuity. The spousal annuity benefit is automatic and does not require a special election.
