Newly Named Petco Love Invests in Lifesaving Work of Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter

Grant of $30,000 will help save more pet lives in the communities of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County.

Newport News, VA (4/19/21) – Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter announced today a $30,000 grant investment from the newly named, Petco Love, to support their lifesaving work for animals in the Hampton Roads area.

Petco Love is a nonprofit leading change for pets nationally by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, Petco Love has invested nearly $300 million in support of adoption and other lifesaving efforts. Petco Love has also helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations nationwide, like the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter.

“Today Petco Love announces an investment in Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter and hundreds of other organizations as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessary euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, President of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only one component. This month, we will also launch the first of our national tools to empower all animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us.”

“Through this grant, Petco Love’s support for the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter helps us continue to offer educational opportunities and programs through outreach to the communities that we serve.  This grant will allow us to further the shelter’s goals and commitment to meet new and innovative lifesaving opportunities and programs that will bring an awareness of the challenges that exist in our communities associated with lost, stray and community animals,” said Roger Iles, Shelter Manager.

Since 2015, Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter has averaged an intake of 6,200 animals per year, and in 2020 the organization reached an 89.75% life-saving percentage for dogs. This huge success was partly credited to a robust foster care program that served over 1,000 animals.  In the past four years, Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter has raised its overall life-saving rate to 84%, an increase of over 20%.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) is a collaborative venture supported by four separate Hampton Roads communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County.  This 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by the City of Newport News on behalf of the four jurisdictions.  This "open-admission" shelter contains a full service veterinary clinic for the shelter animals and has capacity for approximately 100 dogs and 180 cats, as well as pocket pets and other small companion animals.  The shelter's primary responsibilities include holding stray animals until they can be reunited with their owners, rehoming owner-surrendered pets, and facilitating pet adoptions.  The shelter also houses animal control offices for the participating jurisdictions.
