The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) is a collaborative venture supported by four separate Hampton Roads communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County. This 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by the City of Newport News on behalf of the four jurisdictions. This "open-admission" shelter contains a full service veterinary clinic and has capacity for approximately 100 dogs and 180 cats, as well as pocket pets and other small companion animals. The shelter's primary responsibilities include holding stray animals until they can be reunited with their owners, rehoming owner-surrendered pets, and facilitating pet adoptions. The shelter also houses animal control offices for the participating jurisdictions.

Adoption Hours:
Monday: 12 PM - 5 PM 
Tuesday: Closed for Weekly Staff Development / Cleaning (Beginning July 4, 2017 will be open for adoptions 12 PM - 5 PM)
Wednesday: 12 PM - 5 PM
Thursday: 12 PM - 5 PM 
Friday:12 PM - 7 PM
Saturday: 11 AM - 5 PM 
Sunday: 12 PM - 5 PM

The shelter is open 7 days a week from 8:00 AM until 5:
00 PM for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims.
