Citizen Fire Academy

 The Citizen Fire Academy is an exciting, interactive program for citizens to learn firsthand about Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service Operations.  Through a series of lectures, field trips, and simulated activities, participants are given an inside look at the training for an actual firefighter/medic.  

Citizen Fire Academy students receive the following training:

  • CPR Heartsaver/AED Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • Fire Extinguisher Training
  • Fire Suppression Overview
  • Emergency Medical Services Overview

What are the qualifications to participate in the Citizen Fire Academy?

The training is open to City of Newport News residents, business owners, employees, and individuals who are in some way connected to our City.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Because of the sensitive nature of some material shared, participants must pass a criminal history background check.

How do I sign up for the program?

You may download an application.  Completed applications can be emailed to fdcfa@nnva.gov.

If you are unable to use a web option, you may pick up and turn in an application at our Administrative Offices located at:
