Applicants & Eligibility

Recruit Applicants: It is clear that the Firefighter/Medic Recruit selection process is very structured and requires the applicant to cooperate in meeting scheduled appointments. Upon completion of this multi-phased process, applicants may be placed in a pool of eligible applicants from which conditional job offers may be made.

It is likely that not all of the candidates in the eligibility pool will be offered a position with NNFD. The number of positions offered depends upon the department's needs and the number of openings available.

Pre-certified Applicants: To be eligible as a pre-certified Firefighter/Medic, applicants must have received FF 1 and 2, HazMat Awareness & Ops, and hold a current NR EMT certification. EMT-I or EMT-P is also acceptable. Those applicants that are successful in the Pre-certified process must attend a shortened fire academy to orient you to the NNFD.

After you complete the Candidate Information Form, click the Application link below. Then click Employment Opportunities and search for either the Recruit or Pre-certified Application.

Selection Process Steps

Once the application period closes, the NNFD will contact candidates to schedule an interview.

After obtaining employment, candidates will be required to complete and successfully pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) which will be administered prior to fire training.

Don't Forget…

Candidates will need to provide the following items if scheduled for an interview:

  • Current certified DMV record
  • Copies of high school diploma or GED (or college diploma / transcripts)
  • If applicable, a copy of your military service DD-214
  • If applicable, a copy of any current Fire or EMS certifications

Remember…

  • You must complete each step of the hiring process.
  • You are subject to a comprehensive background check.
  • You must complete a medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • You must have the following vaccinations prior to hire: Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), Varicella, the current season's flu shot and Tdap.
