The Newport News Fire Department is a full service all hazards fire department. We are one of twenty-six (26) fire departments in our nation to have an ISO 1 classification and to be also accredited by the Commission on Fire Service Accreditation International. Our service delivery and daily responsibilities include: Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Materials, Marine Incidents, Dive Team, Bomb Team, Technical Rescue, Fire and Life Safety Education, Fire Inspections, Fire Investigations, Pre-Fire Planning, Construction Plans review, Fire and Emergency Medical Training, Airport Fire /Rescue and Emergency Management. The fire department is made up of six (6) Divisions:  Fire Administration, Fire Suppression, Fire Marshal’s Office, Fire Training, Emergency Management and Emergency Medical Services. The fire department has an annual budget of $34,560,261 and responds to approximately 27,000 calls for service per year.

Our fire department is focused on training, mentoring and succession planning for the future. Currently, we have approximately 55 members who are eligible for retirement based on years of service. Over the next five (5) years, many of these seasoned members of the fire department will decide that it is time for the next generation of leaders to take on the challenge of protecting the community. We have adopted the thought process that succession planning and mentoring of our personnel must be a daily activity. We remain focused on preparing our fire department members to be ready for change and to strive to be leaders in our department and in the community.

As Fire Chief, I am dedicated to service and seek like-minded candidates to support our mission. Our members stand united in providing the best customer service possible. We are honored and privileged to serve our community. We hope that this applicant information is valued by you and that you will choose to join the Newport News Fire Department team.

Scott W. Liebold
