City Center Oyster Roast


Friday, October 21, 2016; 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism is joining with Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate to present the City Center Oyster Roast on October 21, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  The event will feature music by The Deloreans, local seafood, a variety of beverages, and activities.

Harpoon Larry’s Fish and Oyster Bar in Newport News has partnered with the event organizers to provide raw and roasted oysters and other signature Harpoon Larry’s dishes.  Additional local food vendors include Capt’n Crabby (crab cake sandwich, Perky Turkey bowl, Chincoteague oyster stew), Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cake of Virginia (funnel cakes), Couture Cakes by Nika (cupcakes), and Captain Harrell & Sons Seafood (shrimp, scallops, crab, clam strips, clam chowder).  Beverage sales (beer, wine, bourbon) will benefit the Warwick Ruritan Club. 

The evening’s activities include lawn games (corn hole and chess) and face painting by Pic-N-Paint.  Wine and Design Newport News will offer guests the opportunity to create their own painting on an 8” x 10” canvas for $5.00 (all supplies and instruction included).  Award winning oyster shucking sisters Deborah Pratt and Clementine Macon-Boyd will demonstrate their world class shucking skills.  They each can deftly open two dozen oysters in less than three minutes and have won the prestigious Virginia Oyster Shucking Competition at the Urbanna Oyster Festival and at the National Oyster Shucking Championship in St. Mary’s County, Maryland where they earned the right to compete in the International Oyster Opening Championship in Galway, Ireland.  The Working Watermen will demonstrate crab pot making and you can climb a tower to practice oyster tonging.  The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter will be on site for animal adoptions.

In support of the City’s Sustainability Initiatives, “eco stations” will be placed throughout the event area.  Event guests are encouraged to recycle trash in containers provided by Bay Disposal, place empty oyster shells in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s bushel baskets, and place food leftovers in the N.O.P.E (Natural Organic Processes Enterprises) containers for food composting.  Each recycled oyster shell will be used to rebuild oyster habitats throughout Virginia.
