Healthier Routes to School Program
Safe Routes to School is a Federal Program that was established to encourage students to live a more active lifestyle through walking and biking to and from school on a regular basis. This program originated in Denmark about 40 years ago and first gained a foothold in the US 15 years ago in California and New York. The purposes of Safe Routes to School Programs are: to give students and families an avenue to develop a lifestyle of fitness through walking and biking to school, to see a decrease in emissions levels in the school zones and the communities, and to see a decrease in overall transportation cost both for the school system and families. These purposes may be accomplished through; Education (Bike & Pedestrian Safety), Encouragement (Events throughout the year), Enforcement (Police Department involvement), Engineering (Improvement to the infrastructure and/or addition of), and Evaluate (Walkability Observations).
Our goal is to have all students grades K-8 participating.
