Forensic Services Unit

Personnel from the Forensic Services Unit (FSU) process complex crime scenes; collect, preserve and transport physical evidence to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science Crime Laboratory for analysis; testify in court; develop and print crime scene photographs; and process physical evidence.

The Forensic Services Unit also works closely with outside agencies, including the Office of the Chief Medial Examiner, United States Attorney's Office and the Newport News Fire Marshal's Office.

Integral to training as a NNPD police officer, the FSU provides instruction to the Basic Law Enforcement Academy. They also provide instruction in blood stain pattern analysis and other forensic specialties to members of the Department, as needed.

The unit falls under the Major Crimes Investigations Section in the police department's organizational structure.
