Concealed Handgun Permit Application

Virginia Code §18.2-308.02 provides that any person 21 years of age or older may apply in writing to the clerk of the circuit court of the county or city in which he resides, or if he is a member of the United States Armed Forces and stationed outside the Commonwealth, the county or city in which he is domiciled, for a five-year permit to carry a concealed handgun. There shall be no requirement regarding the length of time an applicant has been a resident or domiciliary of the county or city.

Effective January 1, 2021, Virginia legislation now requires in-person training for a Concealed Handgun Permit.

For new applicants, you will need to include proof of firearms training and a copy of a government issued photo ID. Acceptable forms of training are listed in Virginia Code §18.2-308.02.

  • Renewal applicants may submit a copy of their current concealed handgun permit.
  • The non-refundable application fee is $50. Checks or money orders may be made out to Angela F. Reason, Clerk.
  • Please allow 45 days for a comprehensive criminal history check to be completed.

Your permit will be mailed to the address listed on your application if granted. If denied, a Court Order so stating will be mailed. If additional information is needed for processing you will be contacted at the telephone number listed on your application – therefore, please take care to complete your application legibly.

If you have lost your permit or it has been damaged, you may use the appropriate form below to obtain a replacement permit. Please note that there is a $5.00 fee for a replacement permit.

If you have a change of address that needs to be reported, you may use form SPA-248 to obtain an updated permit.You will need to petition the court that issued your permit as long as it is still valid, regardless of the jurisdiction of your new address. Please note that there is a $10.00 fee for a change of address.
