Cultural Attractions Fund
The City recognizes that a strong cultural presence adds to the quality of life in the community and enhances the City's ability to attract and retain businesses and residents. In Fiscal Year 2014, City Council established the Cultural Attractions Fund to provide one-time operational and/or project support to local cultural arts entities adversely impacted by the continued effects of the economic recession. These funds are intended to serve as a financial safety net to ensure the ongoing viability of the local cultural assets and should serve as an incentive to encourage private fundraising and grant match investment.
These funds are intended to:
- Provide funding to cultural arts organizations, both public and private entities, serving the City of Newport News whose activities, programs, events and/or services are easily accessible to Newport News residents and whose costs can be documented.
- Encourage private investment and grant match funding.
The Cultural Attraction Fund grants are intended to provide funding to support the operation of local cultural arts organizations. A goal of the process is to encourage private investment and citizen support to replace City Funds. The City Manager will annually recommend any future Cultural Attraction Fund support, if supported by sufficient revenues in proposed upcoming fiscal year operating budgets. Therefore, any Cultural Attraction Fund grant recipients should not consider any funding received to be a sustained source of revenue for the organization.
