The City of Newport News is eligible to apply for the 2021 Local Solicitation Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Grant This grant is an annual grant that is awarded by the federal government based on a locality’s population and crime statistics. The JAG funds allow localities to support a wide range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their local needs and conditions.
The FY 2021 federal allocation for the City of Newport News is $128,365. The intended use of these funds by the Police Department is to (1) $36,850 will provide in-house and external training opportunities to sworn officers to focus on Mid-Level leadership, De-escalation, Critical Incidents, and Implicit Bias. (2) $67,200 to upgrade and expand overt and covert surveillance for our real-time crime center equipment. The equipment upgrade will provide high-definition cameras that will assist in responding and solving violent crime. Enhancement of equipment will be placed in areas experiencing an increase in violent crime in our city; (3) $24,315 will be designated to outfit additional officers assigned to our Crowd Management Unit (CMU) and replace worn or damaged CMU equipment.
